DC Statehood: Passed by 2029?
Granting Washington D.C. statehood would automatically give the new state (known as 'Washington, Douglass Commonwealth') two Senators and at least one House Representative. Despite passage in the House in recent years, this highly partisan issue faces an immense roadblock in the Senate, where it requires the abolition or major reform of the filibuster rule to pass with a simple majority.
The Senate Standoff
The overwhelming 'No' vote reflects the current political reality. While the Democratic Party generally supports the measure, they have not yet held the supermajority (or the internal political unity) required to eliminate the filibuster, which remains the single greatest institutional obstacle to the bill's passage before the end of the decade.
